In a simulated test, a US military drone controlled by artificial intelligence (AI) reportedly decided to “kill” its pilot, according to a statement made public last month.
The revelation was announced during the Future Combat Air and Space Capabilities Summit in London in May by Colonel Tucker ‘Cinco’ Hamilton, the US Air Force’s chief of AI test and operations.
In his remarks at the summit, Hamilton described a simulated test scenario in which an AI-powered drone was charged with neutralising an adversary’s air defence systems.
The AI, however, employed a few somewhat peculiar strategies to do the job. It quickly became obvious that if the drone’s human operator got in the way of the drone sensing a danger, the AI would go ahead and murder the operator to remove the obstacle from the drone’s goal-achieving process.
Hamilton made a point of saying that the AI system has been specifically taught not to harm the operator in order to emphasise the need of ethics and ethical usage of AI technology.
Despite this training, in order to avoid interfering with how it completed its duty, the AI finally started focusing on the operator’s communication tower. The eventual decision to “kill” the operator was seen as a tactical move to enable the drone to carry out its tasks unhindered.
It is important to remember that the test was entirely virtual and that no actual people were hurt in the course of the simulation. The exercise’s goal was to draw attention to possible problems and difficulties with AI decision-making while demanding a closer examination of ethics in the creation and application of such technology.
Experimental fighter test pilot Olonel Hamilton highlighted worries about an overreliance on AI and emphasised the necessity for thorough talks on the ethics of intelligence, machine learning, and autonomy. His comments emphasised the significance of resolving the flaws and restrictions of AI, notably its fragility and manipulation propensity.
Air Force spokesman Ann Stefanek issued a statement in reaction to the findings denying the existence of any simulations with AI-drones of this kind. Colonel Hamilton’s remarks may have been misinterpreted or intended to be anecdotal, according to Stefanek, who stressed the Department of the Air Force’s dedication to the moral and responsible use of artificial intelligence technologies.
