The Supreme Court has ruled that a daughter is eligible for a government job if her father, a government employee, passes away, affirming that marital status does not affect a woman’s right to employment.
A two-judge bench, comprising Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah, issued the decision while hearing a case involving a woman who was dismissed from her job after her father’s death.

The petitioner, Zahida Parveen, had challenged the termination, arguing that she was entitled to the position under the existing rules.
During the hearing, Justice Mansoor Shah questioned why a daughter’s right to employment should be linked to her marital status. “If a son can inherit his father’s job after marriage, why can’t a daughter?” he remarked.
He further emphasized that women’s financial independence should not be dependent on whether they are married.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Advocate General referred to a 2024 ruling by former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, which stated that children of government employees cannot be given jobs on a priority basis. However, Justice Shah clarified that since the petitioner’s case predated the 2024 ruling, it was not applicable in this instance.
The Supreme Court accepted Zahida Parveen’s appeal and reinstated her, stating that a detailed verdict would be issued later.
