The death toll from yesterday’s gun attack on passenger vans in Lower Kurram, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has risen to 42, with more than 30 others injured, according to the local deputy commissioner on Friday.
Kurram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Javedullah Mehsud confirmed the casualties, which included seven women and a nine-year-old girl. The attack occurred on Thursday in the Mandori Charkhel area, a region marked by sectarian tensions and land disputes.
The convoy, consisting of approximately 200 vehicles, was en route from Parachinar to Peshawar when it came under heavy gunfire. DC Mehsud reported that two separate convoys of Shia passengers were targeted in two distinct attacks.
Efforts are underway to treat the injured, and the bodies of the deceased have been transported to Parachinar. The DC added that schools and markets have been closed since the attack. “We will strive to restore normalcy quickly, followed by a grand jirga,” he said. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
