A recent report by NordPass reveals that users worldwide continue to prioritise convenience over security when setting passwords, leaving their online accounts vulnerable to cyberattacks.
The annual list of the most commonly used passwords highlights a recurring trend: people often choose predictable and easily guessable combinations.
Many users opt for straightforward patterns such as “123456789,” “password,” or “qwerty,” which are some of the most accessible keys on a keyboard.
According to The Verge, this approach reflects a lack of consideration for the risks of potential data breaches, as users tend to prioritise speed and ease during the password creation process.

NordPass generated its list using a vast 2.5TB database sourced from publicly available data, including information from the Dark Web. If your password appears on this list, experts recommend changing it immediately to enhance your account’s security.
Here are the top 10 most common passwords in the report:
1. 123456
2. 123456789
3. 12345678
4. password
5. qwerty123
6. qwerty1
7. 111111
8. 12345
9. secret
10. 123123
Interestingly, many users also choose passwords based on their favourite games like “minecraft,” cartoon characters like “pokemon,” or electronic brands like “samsung.” NordPass warns that such basic passwords can be cracked in seconds, making them highly susceptible to hacking attempts.
