PM Shehbaz sets $25 billion IT export target, pushes for faster 5G rollout

On Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving a target of $25 billion in IT exports within the next three years, underscoring initiatives aimed at advancing the telecommunications sector.

In August, the prime minister highlighted the completion of the Information Technology Park project as a significant step toward boosting exports in the IT sector, marking a key milestone on the path to reaching this goal.

During a meeting focused on evaluating ongoing IT projects, digitisation efforts, and measures to enhance IT exports, PM Shehbaz expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Islamabad IT Park project. He directed officials to consult Korean experts to explore ways to expedite the project’s completion timeline, as stated in a press release from the PM Office’s Media Wing.

On the same day, PM Shehbaz met with a five-member delegation from the Netherlands-based VEON Group, led by Chairman Augie K Fabela. He emphasized the government’s efforts to introduce 5G internet services, aiming to ensure fast and reliable connectivity, even in remote areas. “The 5G services would also help the government realise its vision of Digital Pakistan,” he added.

The prime minister acknowledged the telecommunication sector’s crucial role in fostering a cashless, digital economy and commended VEON Group’s subsidiary, Jazz, for its contributions to Pakistan’s telecommunications and financial technology sectors. He expressed openness to collaborating with VEON Group on IT, digitisation, and artificial intelligence projects.

Members of the delegation praised the government’s efforts toward economic stability and highlighted Pakistan’s emerging appeal as a destination for IT and telecom investments.
