Govt shares lift of Toshakhana gifts from 2002 onwards

The Toshakhana, a state repository that houses gifts received by officials from other governments and international dignitaries, had its records declassified on Sunday by the Cabinet Division, according to Aaj News.

The 446-page list outlines the presents that former presidents, prime ministers, ministers, bureaucrats, and even the offspring of these office holders received between 2002 and 2023.

The current administration received 59 presents during the current year, according to information made public by the Cabinet Division. Toshakhana received 224 gifts in total in 2022, 116 gifts in 2021, 175 gifts in 2018, 91 gifts in 2014, and 177 gifts in 2015 from government officials.

The document would soon be made available on the website of the Cabinet Division, according to earlier statements by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif. These are the specifics of the gifts that well-known politicians kept.

Nawaz Sharif:

In 2008, a Mercedes Benz priced at Rs4.2 million was used to retain one carpet, which cost Rs636,888.

One diamond necklace, worth Rs. 1 million, and a table clock, worth Rs. 40,000. Both were kept for the sum of Rs. 207,560.

In 2015, a Piaget timepiece valued at Rs. 1 million and a box of perfumes valued at Rs. 240,000 were kept.

After paying a total of Rs7.6 million in January 2016, one Christopher Claret watch (Rs2 million), a ring (Rs19.5 million), and a pair of cufflinks (Rs16 million) were kept.

After paying Rs3.2 million in February 2016, a Dela Cour watch (Rs3.2 million), a ring (Rs8 million), and a set of cufflinks (Rs5 million) were kept.

After spending Rs808,000 on another Rolex watches in 2018, it was kept and is now worth Rs4 million.

One carpet, worth Rs. 40,000, was kept for Rs. 6,700.

Imran Khan:

For Rs. 20 million, an 18K gold and diamond Graff watch with an estimated value of Rs. 80 million was kept.

For a total of Rs40,000, a pistol and a wolf model worth Rs400,000 were kept.

One Holy Kaaba door key model, worth at Rs. 6,000, was kept without charge.

Asif Ali Zardari:

A firearm with attachments worth at Rs50,000 and a Model of Horse Neck (decoration piece) valued at Rs25,000 were both kept for Rs9,750.

For Rs4.09 million, one BMW 760 Li (model 2004) with a value of $27.3 million was kept.

A Toyota Lexius LX 470 kept for Rs16.1 million and a BMW 760 Li (model 2008) valued at Rs57.8 million each were sold.

One silver ship model, worth Rs. 130,000, was purchased for Rs. 24,000.

Maryam Nawaz:

One pineapple box. Due of its perishability, the item was not appreciated, and no compensation was given to keep it.

Ishaq Dar:

Ishaq Dar, the finance minister, paid a fee of Rs1.2 million in 2017 to retain gifts worth Rs60,3 million.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi:

By paying Rs4.5 million in 2017, the former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was able to keep presents worth R200.2 million.

Since its creation in 1978, the Toshakhana department has required all individuals holding public office, including lawmakers and bureaucrats, to declare gifts to the Cabinet Division. As procedures were started against former prime minister Imran Khan for “not providing information” of Toshakhana gifts maintained by him, the department came under the limelight.

Pervez Musharraf:

According to the official records, more than Rs6.5 million worth of presents were given to the former military ruler, Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf, in 2004. One of these presents, a watch worth Rs500,000, was given to Musharraf in 2005. The former president also received many additional priceless gifts, including watches, jewelry boxes, and other gifts, which he kept after paying the requisite amount.

Sehba Musharraf, Musharraf’s wife, was given a jewelry box in 2003 that was valued at more than Rs2.6 million. Also, she received gifts of Rs.1.65 million on April 6, 2006, and Rs.3.4 million on August 1, 2007, respectively. Around Rs. 10 million in presents were given to her on April 3, 2007, while Rs. 1.4 million in gifts were given to Musharraf on January 31.

Yousuf Raza Gillani:

Fauzia Gillani, the wife of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gillani, kept a jewellery set in December 2009 after paying Rs326,043 for it.
