HEC Makes Major Change to University Degree Programs

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has approved the introduction of dual and joint-degree programs at universities across the country as part of efforts to expand academic opportunities and modernize the higher education sector.

Under the newly approved policy, students will be allowed to enroll in two different degree programs at the same time. According to HEC officials, students pursuing dual degrees will not be limited to subjects within the same department or academic discipline, allowing greater academic flexibility.

The HEC has also approved a framework for joint-degree programs under which students will be able to complete part of their studies at one university and the remaining portion at another institution.

Officials said universities planning to offer joint-degree programs will first be required to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) approved by the HEC.

The policy will also allow Pakistani universities to collaborate with foreign institutions, enabling students to earn joint degrees through international academic partnerships.

HEC officials said the initiative is aimed at improving the quality of higher education, increasing research collaboration, and providing students with broader academic and professional opportunities.

The commission formally approved both dual and joint-degree programs during a recent meeting as part of wider reforms intended to align Pakistan’s higher education system with international academic standards.
