Lt Gen Asim Malik to Continue as ISI Chief

Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik will continue serving as the Director General (DG) of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the country’s top intelligence agency, The Express Tribune reported on Monday, citing security sources.

According to the report, “Lt Gen Asim Malik is continuing his services in his present appointment.” The senior officer, who also serves as the national security adviser (NSA), was earlier due to retire later this year.

Lt Gen Malik was appointed DG ISI in September 2024, succeeding Nadeem Anjum. In April 2025, the government gave him the additional charge of NSA to ensure closer coordination between national security policymaking and on-ground implementation.

Widely regarded as one of the Pakistan Army’s most capable officers, Lt Gen Malik previously served as adjutant general at the General Headquarters (GHQ) for three years. He has commanded an infantry division in Balochistan and a brigade in South Waziristan—both key regions in the country’s security landscape.

A recipient of the Sword of Honour from the Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul, he is also an alumnus of Fort Leavenworth (USA) and the Royal College of Defence Studies (UK).

Retired Lt Gen Naeem Khalid Lodhi described him as a “quiet yet highly respected officer” who worked extensively for soldiers’ welfare during his tenure as adjutant general.
