The Punjab government has unveiled plans for an eco-friendly Elevated Expressway in Lahore, aimed at tackling chronic traffic congestion and improving daily commuting in line with the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
The project was reviewed in a meeting chaired by Secretary Housing Noor-ul-Amin Mengal on Monday. According to a Housing Department spokesperson, the four-lane expressway will be built over the city’s main stormwater drain and is expected to serve more than 70,000 passengers each day.

Once completed, it will cut travel time between Gulberg Main Boulevard and Motorway M-2 to just 10 minutes. The design includes six major interchanges to ensure smooth connectivity, with additional links planned for the Metro Bus and Orange Line Metro Train to facilitate public transport users.
Officials highlighted that the project will not only decongest city traffic but also reduce carbon emissions, supporting the government’s environment-friendly policies.
The meeting also discussed relocating major markets outside Lahore’s urban core, building a new bus terminal near the motorway, and forming a Lahore Traffic Decongestion Committee to oversee planning.
A comprehensive Environmental Impact Study will be carried out before the plan is submitted to the Chief Minister for final approval. Senior officials from LDA, WASA Punjab, and NESPAK were present at the meeting.
