The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast the onset of the 2026 monsoon during the first week of July, with widespread rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms expected across several parts of the country.
According to a weather advisory issued on Monday, a westerly wave is expected to enter the upper parts of Pakistan from the evening or night of June 30, while moist currents from the Arabian Sea are already affecting eastern and central areas. Moist currents from the Bay of Bengal are expected to reach the upper parts of the country from July 2, strengthening the weather system.

The PMD said scattered rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy rainfall, are expected in Kashmir from July 1 to July 6, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from July 1 to July 5, Punjab from July 1 to July 6, Gilgit-Baltistan from July 1 to July 5, Balochistan from July 1 to July 4, and upper Sindh on July 3 and 4.
The department warned that heavy rainfall could trigger urban and flash flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Nowshera, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Faisalabad between July 1 and July 4.
It also cautioned that windstorms and lightning may damage vulnerable structures, including solar panels, electric poles, and billboards. Landslides are likely in vulnerable areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir from July 2 to July 6, while flash flooding may occur in local streams and hill torrents.
The PMD advised tourists and travelers to avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period and urged farmers to plan agricultural activities according to the expected weather conditions. It also asked all relevant authorities to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to minimize the impact of the expected weather system.
