Punjab Introduces Stricter Traffic Rules With Heavy Fines

The Punjab Law Department has issued a new ordinance that sharply increases fines for a wide range of traffic violations. The updated penalties now range from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 20,000 depending on the offense and vehicle type.

Under the new rules, speeding fines have been revised to Rs. 2,000 for motorcycles and Rs. 5,000 for cars. Signal violation fines now stand at Rs. 2,000 for motorcycles, Rs. 3,000 for three-wheelers, Rs. 5,000 for cars and Rs. 10,000 for 2000cc vehicles.

Vehicles above 2000cc will face a Rs. 15,000 fine for running a signal. Three-wheelers will be fined Rs. 3,000 for overloading, while cars below 2000cc will face Rs. 5,000.

Overloading fines increase to Rs. 10,000 for vehicles above 2000cc and Rs. 15,000 for trailers. Emission violations will cost Rs. 2,000 for motorcycles, Rs. 3,000 for three-wheelers and Rs. 15,000 for public transport.

Driving without a fitness certificate can now lead to fines of up to Rs. 100,000 and possible jail time. The ordinance also raises speeding penalties by up to 300 percent.

Wrong-way driving can result in six months in prison or fines up to Rs. 50,000. The punishment for underage driving has doubled, and parents will be held responsible.

Strict penalties will apply for fake plates, yellow plates used improperly and repeated violations. Non-standard or tinted windows can result in jail time of up to six months.

Authorities will take action against drivers who fail to carry registration documents. The ordinance also mandates fully electronic ticketing and makes seat belts compulsory for passengers sitting in the front seat next to the driver.
