Punjab May Extend Summer Vacations Due to Floods

The Punjab government is weighing the possibility of extending summer vacations in schools in flood-affected areas, including Lahore, with a final decision expected on Friday.

Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat said all provincial departments are being coordinated under the School Education Department to devise a joint strategy for rehabilitation and safety in flood-hit regions.

He confirmed that a special meeting of the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group will be held on Friday to assess ground realities and decide whether schools should remain closed longer.

It is worth recalling that on August 7, the Punjab School Education Department had already extended summer vacations until August 31, with schools set to reopen on September 1. Any further extension will be announced after Friday’s consultation.

The development comes as the Meteorological Department has forecast a new spell of heavy monsoon rains across the country from August 29 to September 2. The system is expected to bring urban flooding, landslides, and wind-related damage across multiple provinces.

Rain is forecast in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from August 29 to September 1, in Punjab and Islamabad from August 29 to September 1, in Sindh on August 30 and 31, and in Balochistan from August 30 to September 1. Authorities have been advised to remain on high alert and citizens urged to follow safety advisories.
