The Sindh government has announced plans to establish its own electricity supply and regulatory body, the Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Sepra), in a bid to provide cheaper power to residents and industries.
Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah said the provincial assembly had already approved the creation of Sepra, which would operate independently from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra). The move aims to reduce electricity costs, particularly in Karachi, where K-Electric is currently the sole supplier.

According to Shah, Sepra will oversee power generation and distribution through the Sindh Transmission and Dispatch Company (STDC), allowing the province to set its own rates. He added that the first supply under this system is expected to be directed to the K-IV Grid.
“The electricity rates under Sepra will be much lower than those of K-Electric,” Shah stated, noting that staff recruitment for the authority has already taken place and a formal notification will be issued within the month.
The minister emphasized that Sepra’s rates would be determined independently of federal regulation. This development comes despite Nepra’s decision earlier this year to renew K-Electric’s power distribution and supply licenses for another 20 years.
The provincial government views Sepra as a step toward energy self-sufficiency and more affordable electricity for the people of Sindh.
