The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has selected a new design for upcoming currency notes, announced SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad during a press conference in Karachi on Wednesday.
The announcement was made alongside the central bank’s decision to maintain the current interest rate. Governor Ahmad revealed that the new design, created by an international expert, has been finalized.

However, work on the new notes will only begin after approval from the federal cabinet. “The process is in motion, and we are committed to enhancing security and modernizing our currency,” he said.
Amid this official development, social media platforms have seen a surge in viral videos claiming that Pakistan has already introduced new PKR 1,000 banknotes. In these videos, individuals are seen displaying and using what appears to be a new banknote for transactions.
However, fact-checking by Soch Fact Check confirms these claims are false. The viral note is a printed version of a design submitted to an art competition in 2024 and not an official banknote.
An SBP spokesperson clarified, “This appears to be misinformation. The State Bank has not released any new currency notes.”
The current PKR 1,000 note remains unchanged since its official issuance in February 2007, with full details and security features available on the SBP’s official website.
