Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has identified three professions that he believes will remain safe from being replaced by artificial intelligence: biologists, energy experts, and programmers. Gates explained that these careers require creativity, intuition, and complex problem-solving — qualities that current AI systems cannot replicate.
While acknowledging the powerful capabilities of AI in data processing and decision-making, Gates emphasized that scientific and technical fields depend on human instinctive thinking and creativity. “Biologists play a critical role in human development and medical discovery,” he said. “Even with AI assistance, forming hypotheses and making conceptual breakthroughs is still a deeply human endeavour.”
In addition to biologists, Gates highlighted the continued need for energy experts and programmers. Energy professionals, according to Gates, are crucial for addressing the unpredictable challenges of a changing climate, while programmers are essential for developing and maintaining the very AI systems transforming various sectors. Gates also pointed out that while AI can assist in software development, the creation of new, complex systems will still require human insight, particularly as new technologies and global challenges emerge.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Gates humorously added a fourth example, suggesting that athletes might also be safe from AI replacement. “You know, like baseball — we won’t want to watch computers play baseball,” he joked. “There’ll be some things we reserve for ourselves.”
Despite concerns over job loss, Gates remains optimistic about the potential of AI to transform fields such as healthcare, education, and agriculture. He urged for clear policies and ethical guidelines to ensure AI’s positive societal impact.
Gates, who founded Microsoft in 1975 and helped usher in the personal computing era, continues to be a key figure in discussions about technology’s role in society, from pandemics and climate change to the future of artificial intelligence.
