90% of Milk and 100% of Tea in Karachi Are Adulterated

A recent inspection by the Sindh Food Authority (SFA) has revealed that tea and milk used by nearly all tea stalls and shops in Karachi are contaminated with harmful substances, raising serious health concerns.

According to SFA officials, 100% of the 110 tea leaf samples collected from seven districts were found adulterated with polyphenols and other plant-based additives to cut costs.

Meanwhile, 90% of the 127 milk samples were also deemed unsafe, contaminated with chemicals such as detergent, carbonates, salt, sugar, skimmed milk, and added water.

The findings came after SFA teams inspected 127 tea vendors across areas including Clifton, Saddar, Nazimabad, Federal B Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Korangi, Malir, and Keamari. Of the milk samples tested, only 10% were free from chemical contamination, though some still had added water.

SFA Director General Asif Jan Siddiqui confirmed that tests were conducted in collaboration with the University of Karachi’s lab. “We’ve launched a city-wide crackdown, and strict action will be taken against those selling adulterated milk and tea leaves,” he said.

He warned that these adulterants can lead to digestive problems and other health issues by diluting the natural quality of tea. “This is not just about taste—it’s a serious health risk.”

The inspection was part of an ongoing campaign across all seven districts of Karachi to improve food safety standards and protect public health.
