Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presided over a review meeting to evaluate the performance of major electricity distribution companies, including Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO).
According to Express News, the meeting primarily addressed critical issues such as overbilling, power theft, and the need for greater transparency in billing systems.
The Prime Minister directed officials to expedite the installation of smart meters, aiming to enhance billing accuracy and transparency. He stressed that “overbilling would not be tolerated” and warned that strict action would be taken against those responsible for such practices.
Additionally, the Prime Minister emphasised the need for robust measures to combat electricity theft and ensure efficient distribution. He expressed dissatisfaction with the sluggish progress in appointing Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) for the power distribution companies, instructing that the process be completed swiftly through a “transparent and merit-based approach.”
Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted the importance of merit in the recruitment process for company staff, stating that “no leniency would be allowed in ensuring transparency.” He urged officials to utilise all available resources to meet the targets set by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
The meeting included a comprehensive performance briefing for LESCO, PESCO, and FESCO. As of November 2024, LESCO reported a recovery rate of 96.82%, PESCO 87.98%, and FESCO 97.57%.
Attendees at the meeting included Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahsan Khan Cheema, Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Owais Ahmad Khan Leghari, State Minister for IT & Telecom Shaza Fatima, State Minister for Finance & Revenue Ali Pervez Malik, Prime Minister’s Coordinator Rana Ehsaas Afzal, and other senior government officials.
