The Punjab government is considering declaring winter vacations in December to tackle worsening smog and cold weather. However, the Private Schools Association has voiced concerns, urging a reduction in the proposed holiday period.
District Education Authority officials explained that the holidays are intended to protect public health, particularly in smog-hit regions like Potohar and Murree, where air quality has significantly declined.
The government plans a 20-day break, ending on January 10, 2025, as announced by Punjab’s Secretary of Schools, Khalid Nazir Watoo.

Abrar Ahmed Khan, President of the All Pakistan Private Schools Association (North Punjab), opposed the proposal. He noted that the academic year has already suffered interruptions due to extended summer vacations, smog, and protests.
To limit further disruption, he suggested reducing the winter break to 10 days, beginning January 1. Punjab’s history of smog-related school closures underscores the severity of the issue.
Last month, schools in cities like Lahore and Faisalabad were closed for several days due to hazardous air quality. This year’s persistent smog crisis has reignited calls for sustainable measures to combat air pollution and safeguard public health.
The debate over the winter vacation highlights the challenge of balancing education continuity with urgent environmental and health concerns.
