Saudi Scholar Declares Protesting Against a Tyrant Leader Un-Islamic

Islamic scholar Assim Alhakeem has sparked a significant online debate with his remarks on rebellion and protests against oppressive leaders.

Responding to a question on Twitter about recent political turmoil and alleged state oppression in Pakistan, Alhakeem declared that participating in protests or rebelling against a tyrant leader is against Islamic teachings.

In his tweet, Alhakeem stated, “It is not permissible to rebel against the tyrant leader or to protest or to demonstrate! The people are not interested in what the Quran or the sunnah says. They want to follow their whims and desires even if this burns the whole country!”

The statement was in response to a Twitter user who pointed out claims of 300 Pakistanis killed and thousands arrested during political protests, seeking an Islamic perspective on resisting such oppression.

The remarks have drawn mixed reactions on social media. Critics accused Alhakeem of disregarding the Islamic obligation to stand against injustice, referencing historical examples where speaking truth to power was encouraged in Islam.

Supporters, however, echoed his views, arguing that protests often lead to disorder and conflict, contradicting Islamic principles of peace and societal stability.

The discussion highlights differing interpretations among Muslims on the role of protests and civil resistance in addressing tyranny and advocating for justice within Islamic guidelines. Alhakeem has not yet responded to the criticism or elaborated on his statement.
