The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has announced strict measures to combat water wastage, following orders from the Lahore High Court (LHC). A notification has been issued to impose fines and disconnect water connections for those wasting water in residential and commercial areas.
The LHC, under Justice Shahid Kareem, reconstituted the Judicial Water and Environmental Commission Punjab to safeguard water resources. Advocates Hina Hafeezullah Ishaq and Syed Kamal Ali Haider are now part of the commission. Based on their recommendations, the court directed the imposition of penalties to deter water wastage.

According to the notification, residential consumers will face a Rs10,000 fine for a first-time violation, while commercial users will be fined Rs20,000. Repeat offenders will have their water connections disconnected, as water scarcity has become a critical environmental issue globally.
The court also highlighted that water wastage from car showrooms and service stations using residential connections is contributing to the crisis.
Rawalpindi WASA Managing Director Muhammad Saleem Ashraf confirmed the agency’s commitment to fully enforce the court’s orders. He stressed that all WASA staff would monitor water use closely, with no tolerance for negligence in addressing water wastage.
It is worth noting that Rawalpindi faces a severe water shortage, particularly during the summer months, making these measures vital for preserving water resources.
