In a groundbreaking effort to address smog, the Punjab government has successfully conducted a cloud seeding operation using homegrown technology.
The operation, which took place on Friday, led to artificial rainfall in Jhelum, Gujar Khan, Chakwal, and Talagang, as confirmed by the Provincial Meteorological Department.
Starting around 2 pm, the operation resulted in rainfall within hours in the targeted areas. Experts are optimistic that similar interventions could soon bring relief to Lahore, which has been struggling with severe smog.

The project was a joint initiative involving Pakistan’s Strategic Plans Division (SPD), Army Aviation, PARCO, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Punjab government.
This collaboration reflects the region’s growing commitment to finding innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz commended the success, describing it as a historic achievement that demonstrates the potential of local technology. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb also praised the operation, noting that, unlike last year’s UAE-supported effort, this was entirely driven by local expertise.
The government views this development as a crucial step in addressing the smog crisis and showcasing Pakistan’s ability to develop its own solutions to environmental issues.
