Electricity Bills to Go Up in February

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) said on Thursday that electricity consumers nationwide will face an increase of Rs. 1.41 per unit in fuel charges in their February bills.

During a public hearing at the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), officials explained that the increase follows the end of a negative fuel cost adjustment applied in January.

Power distribution companies now require an additional 48 paise per unit based on December consumption, resulting in the net hike for February billing.

Government officials also told the regulator that work is underway on a new tariff package under which unused electricity may be offered at marginal cost during daytime hours to manage surplus capacity caused by low demand and growing solar power usage.

The proposal will be submitted to Nepra after approval from the federal cabinet.
Officials said the higher fuel charges were driven by increased electricity consumption in December, which rose 6.5 percent from November, forcing the system to rely on costlier power plants due to limited hydropower and nuclear generation.

Industrial representatives challenged official claims of a sharp rise in industrial power consumption, arguing that the data cited by authorities did not reflect actual usage trends.
