New Monthly Sanitation Fee Introduced for Public in Punjab

The Punjab government has officially decided to impose a monthly sanitation fee on households and businesses, aiming to improve municipal cleanliness and boost revenue.

According to the Local Government Department, the fee will range from Rs. 200 to Rs. 5,000, depending on property type and size. Residential properties will be charged based on plot size, while commercial properties will face higher rates.

The billing system will be digitized, though paper bills will still be issued for the first two months. For residential areas, the breakdown is as follows:

  • Under 5 marla: Rs. 300
  • 5 to 10 marla: Rs. 500
  • 10 marla: Rs. 1,000
  • 20 to 40 marla: Rs. 2,000
  • Above 40 marla: Rs. 5,000

Commercial units will be charged:

  • Small businesses: Rs. 500
  • Medium businesses: Rs. 1,000
  • Large businesses: Rs. 3,000

The new fee can be paid online via a dedicated app, with the government targeting Rs. 15 billion in collections during the first year. The move is part of Punjab’s broader effort to enhance urban management and public sanitation standards.
