Millions of Pakistanis are set to enjoy a three-day weekend next month as Independence Day falls on a Friday, creating an extended break for many employees and students.
According to the 2026 calendar, August 14 will be observed as a nationwide public holiday to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day. Those working in government departments, private companies, and educational institutions that follow a five-day schedule from Monday to Friday will also have Saturday and Sunday off, giving them three consecutive holidays.

The extended break is expected to provide many families with an opportunity to travel, visit relatives, or take short vacations during the weekend.
However, the three-day holiday will not apply to everyone. Employees and students whose offices, businesses, schools, or colleges operate six days a week, from Monday through Saturday, will return to work on Saturday after the public holiday on Friday. They will therefore receive only one public holiday instead of a three-day weekend.
Pakistan celebrates Independence Day every year on August 14 with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programs, fireworks, and other events held across the country. Public buildings, roads, and markets are decorated with national flags and lights as people celebrate the occasion with patriotic enthusiasm.
For those following a five-day work or academic week, this year’s calendar offers a welcome long weekend, while those on a six-day schedule will continue their normal routine after the Friday holiday.
