The Punjab government is preparing to launch Phase II of its electric bus project in Rawalpindi, with new routes planned around Marqa-i-Haq Square, formerly known as Kutchery Chowk.
According to district administration officials, construction work on bus stop sheds at six locations is expected to be completed within a week. The bus bays are being developed near Fatima Jinnah Women University, District Courts, Marqa-i-Haq Monument, Police Monument on Old Airport Road, the State Bank of Pakistan on The Mall, and Gymkhana on Rashid Minhas Road.
Officials said more than 35 electric buses will arrive in the garrison city, while the Regional Transport Authority will formally open the new routes after the buses arrive and infrastructure work is completed.
The Punjab Mass Transit Authority said 45 electric buses are currently operating on seven routes in Rawalpindi, with plans to increase the fleet to 80 buses within a month.
Authorities said the new routes would improve travel connectivity between Rawat T-Chowk, Koral Chowk, Saddar, Raja Bazaar, District Courts, Rawalpindi Railway Station, and surrounding areas.
Officials also confirmed that finishing work at Marqa-i-Haq Square, including roads, drainage, lighting, and the Annexe Chowk underpass, is nearing completion.
