Free Electric Bikes Announced for Students in Punjab

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Thursday unveiled a wide-ranging youth package, declaring 2026 as the “Year of Youth” and announcing that the provincial government will distribute 100,000 electric bikes to students.

She made the announcement while addressing a ceremony for the Honhar Scholarship and Laptop Scheme in Lodhran. During the event, she said the government plans to establish IT cities across Punjab and set up an artificial intelligence center in Lahore.

The chief minister said the Punjab government will begin annual distribution of 100,000 laptops and the same number of scholarships starting next year. She also introduced the Parwaz Card, a new initiative aimed at supporting skilled youth in advancing their careers.

Maryam Nawaz said she deliberately chose Lodhran for the ceremony to underline her policy of balanced development. She said the government will treat major cities and smaller districts equally and listed Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan, Layyah, Bhakkar, and Sahiwal among areas of equal priority.

She said an earlier start to laptop and scholarship programs could have benefited a larger number of students.

The chief minister also shared updates on housing projects, saying construction is underway on 125,000 homes under the Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar scheme. She said 50,000 houses are complete, while more than 70,000 are under construction. She added that the government will allocate three marla plots to landless families under the Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar scheme.
