Karachi Traffic Police Set New Speed Limits for All Main Roads

The Karachi Traffic Police have officially set new speed limits for vehicles across the city as part of a broader initiative to enhance road safety and regulate traffic flow.

According to Traffic Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Pir Muhammad Shah, the new rules cap the maximum speed for motorcycles and light transport vehicles (LTVs) at 60 kilometres per hour, while heavy transport vehicles (HTVs) must now adhere to a 30 km/h limit.

To ensure enforcement, authorities are installing speed-monitoring cameras throughout Karachi. Shah added that trackers are being fitted in 10,000 heavy vehicles, which will be connected to the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) for real-time oversight.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Shah said TRACS is already operational in 40% of Karachi, with 1,717 cameras currently active. The system is fully functional in District South, including key arteries like Sharae Faisal, while E-challans are being issued in Malir, Korangi, East, Keamari, and District Central for violations such as overspeeding, signal breaches, and driving without helmets or seat belts.

He further confirmed that industrial zones—including SITE, Landhi, New Karachi, and Korangi—will soon be integrated into the system. The city’s traffic management network is expected to be fully operational by next year, with the installation of 11,000 additional cameras beginning in January 2026.
