Was USD 850,000 in Cryptocurrency Really Stolen at Karachi Airport?

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has dismissed media reports alleging that cryptocurrency worth USD 850,000 was stolen from a passenger at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport (JIAP), describing the claims as “baseless and unfounded.”

In a statement released on Wednesday, the PAA said it promptly launched an inquiry in collaboration with the Airport Security Force (ASF) and local police after the reports began circulating on television and social media platforms.

The authority clarified that a detailed review of CCTV footage and official records confirmed no such incident took place at the airport.

According to the statement, the complainant — identified as Mr. Faizyab — had claimed in a court petition that four uniformed personnel detained him, confiscated his mobile phone, and accessed his passwords to steal cryptocurrency. However, investigators found no evidence supporting these allegations.

“The complainant did not report any such incident to ASF or PAA at the time,” the authority said, adding that CCTV footage reviewed by ASF and PAA teams showed no trace of the alleged event.

The PAA further stated that airline records listed the complainant as a no-show for his flight to Peshawar, while the police report submitted to the court confirmed no such occurrence.

The authority urged media outlets and social media users to verify information before publication to prevent unnecessary public alarm.
