Govt Announces Interest-Free Loans for Electric Bikes

The federal government has launched a new initiative aimed at boosting the adoption of eco-friendly transport by introducing the Cost Sharing Scheme for Electric Bikes and Rickshaws/Loaders.

According to details shared by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the program is expected to finance around 116,000 e-bikes and 3,170 e-rickshaws/loaders during the fiscal year 2025-26.

The distribution will take place in two phases. In the first phase, 40,000 e-bikes and 1,000 e-rickshaw/loaders will be provided, while the second phase will cover the remaining 76,000 e-bikes and 2,171 e-rickshaws/loaders.

To ensure inclusivity, a quota has been set aside, with 25% of e-bikes reserved for women and 10% for small business operators, including courier and delivery services. For rickshaws and loaders, 30% of units will be reserved for fleet operators.

Eligibility extends to all Pakistani citizens with a valid CNIC, including residents of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Applicants must be between 18 and 65 years of age for e-bikes and 21 to 65 for rickshaws/loaders.

To make financing affordable, the government has offered subsidies of up to Rs50,000 for e-bikes and Rs200,000 for rickshaws/loaders. Loans will follow an 80:20 debt-to-equity ratio, with interest fully absorbed by the government. Repayment will span up to two years for e-bikes and three years for rickshaws/loaders.

The SBP confirmed that banks will process applications through a digital lending platform, while the Engineering Development Board will shortlist vehicle models and ensure after-sales service.
