Pakistanis are in for a rare four-day break this August, as two important days — Independence Day and Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) — fall just before the weekend.
Independence Day – Thursday, August 14
The Cabinet Division has officially declared Thursday, August 14, as a public holiday to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day. Celebrations are expected nationwide, with flags, parades, and public events planned across major cities.

Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) – Friday, August 15
Chehlum, which marks the 40th day after Ashura and honors the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), will fall on Friday, August 15. While not included in the federal holiday list, local holidays are likely to be declared in major cities. Last year, Karachi and Rawalpindi observed public holidays on Chehlum, and similar announcements are expected this year.
Weekend – Saturday and Sunday, August 16–17
Following these two significant days, the regular weekend will extend the break to four consecutive days, from Thursday through Sunday. This extended holiday stretch offers citizens a chance to rest, travel, or attend religious gatherings.
In preparation, authorities have been instructed to ramp up security across the country for both Independence Day celebrations and Chehlum processions to ensure peaceful public participation.
