Punjab Reveals Launch Date for E-Taxi Scheme

The Punjab government is set to roll out its much-anticipated e-taxi scheme in August, with the provincial transport department confirming that all preparatory work has been completed. As part of the initiative, a quota of 30 e-taxis has been specifically allocated for women.

Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan stated that a dedicated online portal is being developed with the help of the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) to handle applications.

He also confirmed that nine companies have been shortlisted to supply the vehicles, which will be provided on easy, interest-free installments.

The scheme will initially operate as a pilot project, distributing a total of 1,100 e-taxis to fleet owners, individuals, and ride-hailing companies. Of these, 1,000 vehicles will be given to fleet operators, each required to purchase at least 10 taxis.

The remaining 100 vehicles will be allocated at an individual level. According to official documents, the Punjab government will cover the markup, token tax, and registration fees.

Fleet owners will be responsible for a 40% down payment, with the Bank of Punjab financing the rest. For individual applicants, men will need to pay a 30% down payment, while women will be required to cover 40%.

Suppliers will also be responsible for setting up spare parts facilities, service centers, and charging points.
