Chakwal Records Second Heaviest Cloudburst in July Ever

Chakwal witnessed one of the most extreme weather events in the country’s history, receiving 423mm of rainfall in just 24 hours. This makes it the second heaviest July cloudburst on record in Pakistan, with rain levels reaching nearly 1.4 feet. The highest recorded July downpour remains the 620mm that fell in Islamabad in 2001.

The intense cloudburst has added to the ongoing monsoon devastation across Punjab. A state of emergency was declared in multiple districts on Thursday as relentless rains triggered flash floods and widespread destruction.

Over the past 24 hours, more than 60 people lost their lives due to rain-related incidents across the province. At least 63 deaths and 290 injuries have been reported. Lahore recorded the highest number of casualties, followed by Faisalabad, Okara, Sahiwal, and Pakpattan.

Emergency response teams have been deployed to assist affected areas. Drainage operations are underway, especially in urban centres, to clear standing water and prevent further damage. Relief efforts include medical aid, evacuation from low-lying zones, and provision of shelter for displaced families.

The downpour is part of a larger monsoon system expected to continue affecting different parts of the country. Authorities remain on high alert as forecasts indicate more heavy rain within the next 24 hours.
