Pakistan to Introduce 35 New Medicines for Major Diseases

The federal government is preparing to introduce 35 new life-saving and modern medicines in Pakistan, including treatments for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, blood pressure, kidney and prostate conditions.

The list also includes next-generation vaccines to prevent various infectious diseases. According to official sources, the federal cabinet is scheduled to review the price-setting proposal for these medicines during its meeting on Wednesday, where approval is expected.

These medicines, based on modern international formulas, have seen growing demand in Pakistan. However, their availability has remained limited due to regulatory delays and the absence of fixed pricing and formal registration.

A senior health official revealed that the matter had been pending for over two years, held back by procedural hurdles and slow decision-making.

Once approved, the prices for all 35 medicines will be placed under the government’s mandatory price control system, ensuring affordability and preventing price manipulation. The move will also allow for the import or local production of these essential drugs, improving access for patients.
