Lahore to Get Its First Underground Metro Train

The Punjab government has initiated the feasibility and design phase for the Blue Line Metro Train, a major step toward expanding Lahore’s public transport network.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan to accelerate the process, aiming for swift progress in finalizing the project’s initial stages.

The proposed metro line will span 27 kilometers, linking Valencia Town with Babu Sabu Chowk. It will pass through key areas, including Johar Town, Faisal Town, Garden Town, Kalma Chowk, Gulberg Main Boulevard, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, and Allama Iqbal Town.

The train service is expected to cater to more than 250,000 passengers daily.

The government has set a three-year target for completion, employing advanced machinery and tunneling technology capable of digging up to six meters per day. The estimated cost is projected to exceed Rs. 600 billion, though a final assessment will be determined after the feasibility phase concludes.

International financial institutions from China, Japan, and France have expressed interest in supporting the project. Earlier transport studies, including one conducted in June 2024, confirmed that a fully underground metro line is viable.

Two days ago, Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving urban mobility by officially integrating the Blue Line Metro Train into Lahore’s transit system.
