Pakistan Unveils Next-Generation JF-17 PFX Fighter Jet

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) unveiled the JF-17 PFX fighter jet at the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2024 in Karachi. The event marked the first public display of the next-generation aircraft, highlighting Pakistan’s advancements in defense technology.

Developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC), the JF-17 PFX is a 4.5-plus generation fighter jet. It features enhanced capabilities, including extended-range air-to-air missiles (AAMs) and plans for locally manufactured radar systems.

Officials aim to finalize the jet’s development by the end of the decade, strengthening Pakistan’s indigenous defense production.

IDEAS 2024 proved significant for defense exports, with Pakistan signing 82 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with international partners, securing deals worth $30 billion. The agreements span a variety of advanced military equipment, such as drones, fighter jets, naval vessels, and electronic warfare systems.

Lt Gen (Retd) Chiragh Haider, Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Production, announced that combined export orders, including prior MoUs, now total $36 billion. While these agreements require extensive testing and modifications, some are expected to reach completion within a few years.

The unveiling of the JF-17 PFX and the new deals underscore Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its defense industry and expanding global partnerships.
