HEC Announces Holidays for Universities in Punjab

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has directed universities in Lahore and Multan to close due to worsening smog conditions. An official notification stated that classes will now be held online to safeguard students and staff from the hazardous air quality.

Schools across Punjab, excluding Murree, will also remain closed until November 24, as part of broader government measures to address the crisis. Outdoor activities have been restricted, with authorities urging the public to wear masks and minimise time spent outdoors.

To combat pollution, the Punjab government has implemented a three-day lockdown in Lahore and Multan on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Construction activities in both cities have also been suspended for a week starting November 16. Officials have warned that stricter actions may be enforced if air quality continues to decline.

Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb highlighted the serious health risks posed by smog, comparing its dangers to those of COVID-19. Reports show that over 600,000 respiratory cases were recorded across Punjab in a week, with 65,000 hospitalisations reported.

In response to the crisis, paramedic leave has been cancelled, hospital OPD hours extended, and Rescue 1122 services enhanced. Additionally, markets are now required to close by 8 p.m., while several businesses violating anti-smog measures have been sealed as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to tackle the problem.
