Strict action taken against Gen (retd) Bajwa’s brother

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has reportedly accepted the resignation of Iqbal Javed Bajwa, its Deputy Station Manager in Birmingham, after it was revealed that his educational credentials were fraudulent.

According to a spokesperson for the airline, Iqbal, who is said to be the brother of former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa, was asked to step down following the discovery of a fake educational certificate he had submitted.

The issue came to light when Iqbal was issued a show-cause notice on July 13, 2024, by PIA’s finance manager in Birmingham. He was given seven days to verify the authenticity of his Intermediate degree or face termination, in accordance with PIA’s Employees Disciplinary Policy of 2019.

Upon investigation, it was found that Iqbal’s certificate was not valid. The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Lahore did not confirm the roll number he provided, stating that he had not passed the examination under that name or roll number. This was officially communicated to PIA management in a letter from the board.

The move to verify employee credentials stems from a directive issued by the airline last year, which required all staff to submit their educational documents for scrutiny. Iqbal, a long-standing employee of PIA, had joined the airline in Rawalpindi in 1977 before relocating to the UK and gaining regular employment status in the late 1980s.
