Punjab Launches QR Code System for Vehicle Fitness Certificates

On Saturday, the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, announced the introduction of an advanced computerized system for issuing vehicle fitness certificates throughout the province.

Senior Secretary Punjab Maryium Aurangzeb is leading this initiative, which aims to address vehicle emissions and enhance air quality in Punjab.

The new system will assign a unique QR code to each vehicle, serving as its digital identifier. This QR code, which will need to be renewed annually, will help in monitoring emissions and engine performance to ensure environmental compliance.

Speaking to the press, Senior Secretary Maryium Aurangzeb stressed the environmental impact of this measure. “This initiative represents the second phase of our broader plan to combat vehicular pollution,” she said. “It is an essential step toward achieving a smog-free Punjab.”

Moreover, the initiative will incorporate surveillance via Safe City cameras to identify and track vehicles that emit excessive smoke, thereby enforcing strict compliance with emission standards.

“The QR-based system will simplify the issuance of vehicle fitness certificates and support our efforts to foster a sustainable environment,” Aurangzeb explained.

Earlier, the Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered the provincial authorities to take action against smoke emitting vehicles in the provincial capital. The directive was issued by Justice Shahid Karim of LHC.
