Sindh Makes Major Change to Vehicle Number Plate Rules

The Sindh government has implemented the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2024, introducing a significant change in the ownership and registration of vehicle number plates across the province.

Under the new amendment, vehicle number plates will now be linked directly to the owner’s Computerized National Identity Card. This means the number plate will belong to the individual rather than being permanently tied to a specific vehicle.

According to a notification issued by the Sindh Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department, vehicle owners will be recognized as the legal holders of registration numbers recorded against their CNIC. As a result, if a person sells a vehicle and purchases another one, they will be allowed to retain and transfer their existing registered number plate to the newly acquired vehicle.

In addition to this change, the department has introduced two new number plate series that incorporate the CNIC-based registration structure.

Officials said the move aims to streamline vehicle registration records and ensure clearer ownership tracking. The amendment formally enforces the revised framework under provincial law, making the CNIC-linked registration system applicable throughout Sindh.
