Punjab Receives 87 Electric Buses from China for Major District

The Punjab government has received 87 air-conditioned electric buses from China, marking a major milestone in its plan to introduce eco-friendly and affordable public transport in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

According to officials, the new electric bus project will operate along 84 kilometers across the twin cities, providing commuters with a modern and comfortable travel experience. Each bus features Wi-Fi, GPS tracking, and mobile charging ports, ensuring convenience for passengers throughout their journey.

Construction work has already begun at the former Government Transport Service (GTS) station, while charging stations will be installed at multiple locations across the city. Under this initiative, senior citizens aged 60 and above will travel free of cost, while the standard fare for other passengers has been fixed at Rs20 per ticket.

PML-N Rawalpindi Division President Malik Abrar Ahmed said the fleet of 87 electric buses will be launched in phases across four designated routes. The first phase will cover the route from Rawat to Motorway Chowk, offering a reliable and energy-efficient transport option to daily commuters.

The inauguration, initially planned for October 15, was postponed due to Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protests across Punjab. Officials confirmed that the project’s formal launch will take place soon once conditions return to normal.
