Punjab Issues Flood Advisory Ahead of Seventh Monsoon Spell

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab has issued a flood advisory as the province prepares for its seventh spell of monsoon rains starting August 13.

According to the PDMA, the upcoming rains could raise water levels in major rivers, including the Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum, as well as nearby streams and tributaries. Authorities have warned that low-lying and riverbank areas are at risk of flooding due to expected heavy rainfall.

Commissioners, deputy commissioners, and relevant departments have been directed to remain on high alert. PDMA Punjab Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has urged local officials to ensure the timely evacuation of residents and livestock from vulnerable areas. He also reminded the public that swimming in rivers, canals, and other water bodies is strictly prohibited during this period.

Citizens can contact the PDMA helpline at 1129 in case of emergencies.

The last monsoon spell caused widespread damage across Pakistan, leading to over 300 deaths and leaving many missing. Gilgit-Baltistan, a popular tourist region, was hit by flash floods and landslides, resulting in at least 10 fatalities and multiple injuries.
