Islamabad to Introduce New Subject in Schools and Colleges

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be formally introduced as a subject in Islamabad’s schools and colleges starting from the upcoming academic session in April.

According to the National Curriculum Council (NCC), students from class six to eight will have the option to choose either computer science or AI, while students from class nine to twelve can select AI as an elective.

Students from nursery to class five will study AI in a non-credit, activity-based format and will not be examined.

The Education Ministry said integrating AI and Robotics into the national curriculum aims to prepare students for emerging technological challenges. Under the direction of Education Secretary Nadeem Mahbub, the NCC, with input from experts, has finalized the AI and Robotics curriculum for grades one to twelve.

The curriculum focuses on developing skills in computational thinking, automation, intelligent systems, robotics design, ethical use of technology, and problem solving through structured learning aligned with national priorities and international best practices. It will be shared with stakeholders to support training and phased implementation.

Director NCC Dr. Tabassum Naz confirmed that the curriculum was finalized in consultation with provinces and that students in Islamabad will have the option to study AI from April. A ministry official added that while education is a devolved subject, provinces were involved in drafting the curriculum. The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) will also include AI in its examinations.
