Deadline Announced to Remove Illegal Number Plates in Karachi

Police in Karachi have given motorists until December 5 to replace illegal or unreadable number plates. Officials warned that vehicles will be seized after the deadline as part of a citywide enforcement campaign. The decision follows orders from Additional Inspector General Javed Alam Odho, who instructed police to take strict and indiscriminate action against fake or altered plates.

Police said many motorists have started removing, hiding or modifying their plates to avoid e-challan fines. The spokesperson added that this practice has become widespread since the automated system was launched.

Officers will now verify whether plates meet legal requirements, and vehicles violating the rules will be impounded. Release will only be allowed through legal proceedings.

Inspector Muhammad Yousuf Mehr of Orangi Town said every police station has begun snap-checking within its area. He stated that officers will fully enforce the new orders after December 5. All vehicles and motorcycles will be checked for plate visibility and authenticity.

Officers will ask drivers for documents and verify registration through the Excise Department portal or the CPLC system.

Police will also confirm the driver’s identity through the Tasdeeq biometric app. If a vehicle is stolen, officers will arrest the individual under the relevant case and seize the vehicle. Plates that appear suspicious or unidentifiable will lead to seizure under Section 550 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Mehr said complaints have increased about vehicles without plates or with incomplete numbers. Police believe the drive will improve security and help curb rising vehicle and motorcycle theft. The crackdown will formally begin on December 6.
