Karachi’s public transport network is set for a major upgrade next week as the Sindh government begins rolling out new double-decker buses and electric buses across the city. The move marks one of the most significant expansions of the People’s Bus Service in recent years.
Officials briefed Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on the ongoing transport projects during a meeting on Monday. He said the new double-decker fleet and electric buses are scheduled to arrive in Karachi within a week, and the department is finalizing preparations to place them on the roads immediately.

The plan is expected to give commuters more reliable and cleaner transit options. The province also intends to introduce an electric taxi service in December, creating another affordable transport option for Karachi residents.
The Sindh government aims to add 500 more buses this financial year, along with new routes in other districts to improve connectivity in underserved areas. To support women’s mobility, authorities will open scooter-riding training centers at all divisional headquarters.
These centers will operate under the Pink Scooty Scheme and are designed to help women gain confidence and independence in daily travel. Officials also reviewed progress on the Yellow Line and Red Line BRT projects.
Memon said construction on the Yellow Line continues round the clock and directed teams to complete depots and remove utility obstacles without delay. He added that the second section of the Taj Haider Flyover will open soon, restoring two-way traffic from today.
