Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday announced several major development projects for Rawalpindi. She introduced a Rs30 billion signal-free corridor, an expanded electric bus network, and multiple infrastructure and welfare initiatives. The announcements came during the inauguration of the Electro Bus Phase II project.
She said the 25-kilometre corridor includes nine underpasses and three flyovers. The project has begun and will finish next year. It is expected to benefit nearly 200,000 daily commuters once completed.

Maryam also confirmed that Rawalpindi’s electric bus fleet will increase from 45 to 80 vehicles. The total number of buses for the Rawalpindi division will reach 145. Jhelum, Chakwal, and Attock will each receive 15 buses to improve regional connectivity.
She stated that the bus expansion aligns with the government’s plan to introduce 1,100 green buses across Punjab by December. The service charges a Rs20 fare, while women, senior citizens, students, and persons with disabilities travel free. Each bus includes Wi-Fi, charging ports, CCTV cameras, wheelchair access, and separate compartments for women.
The chief minister also announced a Rs100 billion project to upgrade rural drainage and sewerage systems. She revealed plans for a new provincial anti-harassment law to protect citizens. She said the government will also build the Thal Expressway from Rajanpur to Bhakkar.
Maryam added that new cancer hospitals will be set up in Rawalpindi and Dera Ghazi Khan. She said these centres will be established after the completion of the Lahore Cancer Hospital. The projects aim to expand access to specialised healthcare across the province.
