Motorway Police to Register FIRs for Overspeeding

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has warned that motorists driving above 150 kilometers per hour on motorways will face registration of first information reports (FIRs), turning speeding into a criminal offense.

Chairing a performance review meeting of the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP), the minister directed officials to strictly enforce overspeeding and axle-load policies. He said vehicles crossing the 120 km/h limit would face fines, while speeds beyond 150 km/h would lead to FIRs.

Aleem Khan emphasized that road accidents must be reduced through preventive measures, including public awareness campaigns, distribution of pamphlets, and warning boards at motorway entry points. He expressed dissatisfaction with the current performance of the Motorway Police, noting that public service must remain their primary duty.

In a sharp directive, he ordered the immediate withdrawal of staff serving at officers’ residences, saying police personnel could not work as barbers, cooks, or attendants. “Holding offices is not a privilege but a responsibility to serve the nation,” he said.

The meeting also discussed outsourcing the vehicle fitness inspection system and introducing electronic monitoring, similar to models in developed countries. The minister gave the NHMP one week to show clear improvement, warning that strict action would follow if results were not achieved.
