Date Announced for Launch of Electric Tram in Lahore

The Punjab government has announced plans to introduce a tram service in Lahore, with operations set to begin in February 2026. Transport Minister Bilal Akbar confirmed that a successful trial paved the way for the project, which will run along a line connecting Thokar to Harbanspura.

According to the minister, each tram will accommodate up to 270 passengers. The project carries an estimated cost of $3 million.

He noted that officials from Punjab NESPAK and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority recently visited China to review arrangements linked to the initiative.

Akbar also revealed that metro train projects are being prepared for Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The Faisalabad metro is expected to handle 300,000 commuters daily, while the Gujranwala line aims to serve 140,000 passengers. The Faisalabad project has been budgeted at $110 million, and the Gujranwala metro at $50 million.

Highlighting Lahore’s worsening air pollution, largely caused by motorcycles and other vehicles, the minister said the tram and metro initiatives are part of a broader government strategy to reduce environmental hazards and provide sustainable transport solutions.
