The Sindh government has extended the deadline for the installation of Ajrak number plates until August 14, allowing vehicle owners more time to comply with the new requirement.
The announcement was made by Provincial Minister for Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Mukesh Kumar Chawla during a press talk in Karachi on Monday. He said police have been directed not to issue challans for vehicles that have yet to adopt the new design during this grace period.

“Ajrak is a symbol of Sindh’s cultural identity and will remain a feature of the number plates,” Chawla stated, adding that the design also carries security elements as part of the plates’ integration with the Safe City project.
While the Ajrak plates have faced criticism regarding legality and design, the minister maintained that they are part of a broader effort to combine cultural representation with modern technology in vehicle registration.
Chawla clarified that although fines for non-installation of Ajrak plates are temporarily on hold, traffic police will continue to penalise other violations such as driving without a helmet or incomplete documentation.
The new number plates are mandatory for all vehicles, and Chawla urged citizens to complete the switch before the extended deadline.
