Govt Orders Uninterrupted Power Supply During Muharram, Warns DISCOs Against Negligence

In a significant move to ensure public convenience during the upcoming holy month of Muharram, the Energy Ministry has directed all electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) across Pakistan to ensure uninterrupted power supply. Energy Minister Awais Leghari has issued strict instructions to the chief executive officers of all DISCOs, emphasizing the importance of reliable electricity during a time when millions of people gather for religious processions and Majalis to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA).

“As you are aware, the sacred month of Muharramul Haram is approaching, during which millions of devotees/mourners across Pakistan will participate in Majalis and processions to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA),” the minister stated.

With Muharram coinciding with the month of July, when high temperatures and potential heatwaves are anticipated, the ministry has underlined the critical need for consistent power supply. “Since the holy month of Muharram is falling in the month of July and heat waves are expected, it is very much imperative that all necessary measures are taken to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to — avoid any inconvenience to the public,” the directive added.

The Energy Minister has called for urgent and proactive measures, instructing DISCOs to prepare detailed plans for preemptive maintenance and effective load management. Emergency response teams are to be formed and placed on high alert, especially on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, which are particularly significant days of mourning.

“Conduct thorough inspections of all transmission and distribution networks, particularly in areas where Majalis and processions are expected. Ensure that all faulty equipment is promptly repaired or replaced to prevent outages,” the order stated. “Deploy dedicated emergency response teams on high alert throughout Muharram, especially on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, to address any power disruptions immediately,” it added.

Coordination with local administrations, law-enforcement agencies, and organizers of religious gatherings has also been emphasized to identify critical locations requiring prioritized power supply and backup arrangements. The minister underscored the importance of keeping the public informed to minimize disruptions.

He noted, “Ensure standby generators and UPS systems at sensitive locations to provide backup power in case of any grid issues.” The directive also includes updating inventory stocks to guarantee the availability of transformers and other essential materials in each sub-division.

To ensure swift and efficient handling of any power-related emergencies, duty rosters are to be prepared, and dedicated control centers established to maintain a round-the-clock presence of technical and operational staff.

“The sanctity of Muharram demands our utmost commitment to serving the public with diligence and respect. Any negligence in this regard will be viewed seriously,” the minister warned, directing DISCOs to submit compliance reports promptly.
