Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a nationwide plan to gradually eliminate meter readers from all power distribution companies (except K-Electric), introducing a new self-reading system via the upcoming “Apna Meter Apni Reading” mobile app, sources told Business Recorder.
This move comes amid widespread complaints of inflated electricity bills and billing irregularities linked to the current system. The app, part of the Power Smart Mobile App suite, will allow consumers to submit their own meter readings through their smartphones.

The Prime Minister chaired a key meeting on June 17, 2025, instructing the Power Division to roll out the app in Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, and Balochi to ensure accessibility. A soft launch will take place soon to address any initial glitches before its official nationwide release.
The government has allocated Rs. 316 million for a public awareness media campaign, and the Power Information Technology Company (PITC) has been directed to work closely with distribution companies (Discos) to implement the campaign. Savings from reduced administrative costs will be passed on to consumers.
Detailed guidelines and roles for implementation have been finalized, with PITC expected to ensure the apps—including CCMS+ and Lineman Mobile Solution—are fully tested and reliable before launch.
